Forgiving Ourselves

It rained during the night, and I had left my car’s trunk open. I saw this when I went out the next morning. I patted down the wettest areas with a towel, removed a plastic shopping bag that had collected a puddle, and reminded myself to leave the trunk open later in the day when it would be sunny and warm to help it dry and lessen mildew. I wasn’t upset with myself or with the trunk being left open, not in the slightest; getting upset would not have helped. I didn’t need a reminder to not let this happen in the future, for I knew that leaving the trunk open wasn’t a good idea.

How would you have reacted to finding your car trunk open and wet? Would your response be different if someone else in your household had left it open? If so, why?
