Gratitude
I was writing a piece on gratitude in the wood-paneled Rose Reading Room of the main branch of the New York Public Library. After reading it and being pleased with it, I got up to go to the restroom. "Where's the restroom?" I asked the woman at the information desk. She looked at me and said, "You mean, 'Good morning. How are you? Could you please tell me where the restroom is?'" I immediately appreciated that gratitude is an ongoing activity, a way of seeing the world; it’s not just a concept.
